Cannabis Laws in Ohio

Is weed legal in Ohio? Yes — recreational and medical cannabis are both legal here for adults 21+.

Recreational cannabis is legal in Ohio for adults 21+ (Issue 2, 2023), with licensed retail sales open since August 2024. Adults may possess up to 2.5 oz of flower and grow up to 6 plants (12 per household) at their primary residence. Senate Bill 56, effective March 2026, tightened rules including banning out-of-state purchases and stiffening penalties for exceeding plant limits.

Federally, cannabis is still a controlled substance nationwide — but that status is in flux. See where rescheduling stands →
