Cannabis Laws in California

Is weed legal in California? Yes — recreational and medical cannabis are both legal here for adults 21+.

California legalized adult-use cannabis with Prop 64 in 2016 and was the first state with a medical program (1996); licensed retail is widely open. Adults 21+ can possess up to one ounce of flower and 8 grams of concentrate and grow up to six plants per residence. Local city and county rules can further restrict where sales and cultivation are allowed, so availability varies by area.

Federally, cannabis is still a controlled substance nationwide — but that status is in flux. See where rescheduling stands →
