Cannabis Laws in Illinois

Is weed legal in Illinois? Yes — recreational and medical cannabis are both legal here for adults 21+.

Recreational cannabis is legal in Illinois for adults 21+ (sales began January 2020) with an established retail market. Residents may possess up to 30g of flower; non-residents are limited to half those amounts. Home cultivation is allowed only for registered medical patients (up to 5 plants); recreational home grow is prohibited.

Federally, cannabis is still a controlled substance nationwide — but that status is in flux. See where rescheduling stands →
