Cannabis Laws in New Jersey

Is weed legal in New Jersey? Yes — recreational and medical cannabis are both legal here for adults 21+.

New Jersey voters approved adult-use cannabis in 2020 (enacted 2021), and over 100 licensed dispensaries now serve adults 21+. Possession is allowed up to 6 ounces, but home cultivation remains illegal for everyone, including medical patients. Bills to permit limited medical home grow have been under consideration.

Federally, cannabis is still a controlled substance nationwide — but that status is in flux. See where rescheduling stands →
