Cannabis Laws in Alabama

Is weed legal in Alabama? Medical only — cannabis is legal for registered medical patients, but not for general adult use.

Alabama legalized medical cannabis in 2021, but the program was stalled for years by litigation over how licenses were awarded. The commission approved dispensary licenses in December 2025 and targeted a 2026 launch, though ongoing legal challenges and stays mean products may not yet be reliably on shelves. The program bans smokable/raw flower and allows only approved forms such as tablets, gummies, oils, and topicals.

Federally, cannabis is still a controlled substance nationwide — but that status is in flux. See where rescheduling stands →
